Popular suburban hockey coach sued over cyber bullying
A beloved hockey coach, nine-time state champ and member of the Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame is accused of sinking so low as to attack another man’s children online.
A civil lawsuit filed in May alleges New Trier Hockey Club coach Bob Melton anonymously posted vicious attacks on a hockey website against Wilmette Hockey Association President Chuck Smith and his family.
In 2011, Smith and 10 other board members fired Melton as WHA’s hockey director. The cyber bullying and online harassment began shortly after.
An investigation linked at least twenty comments to Bob Melton’s internet provider address. Smith filed a civil lawsuit against Melton claiming defamation of character, emotional distress and invasion of privacy.
Melton says the allegations are “totally false” and that New Trier Hockey Club conducted a thorough investigation and found no evidence to support the allegations.
