Brian Urlacher announces retirement from NFL

The man who once symbolized the Chicago Bears’ rock-solid defense is retiring from the NFL.

All-Pro linebacker Brian Urlacher announced his retirement on Twitter Wednesday.

The Bears announced in March he and the team couldn’t reach a deal on a contract, and were going their separate ways.

Urlacher said at the time it was more of an ultimatum than anything else.

No other offers, if there were any, became public.

Urlacher won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors.

He said partly in a statement: “Although I could keep playing, I’m not sure I would bring a level of performance or passion that’s up to my standards.”

He tweeted a link to an official statement:

Urlacher is the best bear ever and there will always be other options. He could be like Jay Glazer and talk sports on ESPN. We love you Urlacher!
