It was another day for firsts. I was flat on my stomach, holding an ultrasound handle, and pressing it to the abdomen of a 26 year-old dolphin.
We were at the Brookfield Zoo, where the Chicago Zoological Society announced that three of the zoo’s six bottlenose dolphins are pregnant. Allie (26), Tapeko (31) and Spree (10) are expected to give birth during the summer and fall. As for the father? CZS believes 30 year-old Chinook is responsible for both Allie and Tapeko’s bundles of joy, while Spree arrived at the zoo pregnant as part of cooperative work with the Minnesota Zoo.
Brookfield veterinarians and trainers showed us how they’re caring for the dolphins leading up to their delivery dates.
