A semi-truck driver may face a charge of attempted murder of a police officer after allegedly attacking the off-duty officer outside Planned Parenthood in Merrillville.

The police involved shooting happened just before 4 p.m. Monday.

WGN is being told by investigators that a semi trailer was in the parking lot of Planned Parenthood unattended.

The Merrillville police officer, who was off-duty at the time, was working as private security in uniform and wrote a couple of tickets for the truck.

Just before 4 p.m., the driver of the truck came back and the officer went to talk with him and ask why he was there.

photoNorthwest Indiana major crimes task force spokesperson Robert Byrd tells WGN that the truck driver then attacked the officer, jumping on top of him, pushing him to the ground and hitting him in the face repeatedly.

The officer reached for his service weapon and shot the truck driver in stomach.

Both men were taken to Methodist Hospital in Merrillville.

The truck driver got out of surgery Monday night.

The officer is being treated for his facial injuries.

Because this is a police involved shooting, the Northwest Indiana major crimes task force is heading up the investigation.
