Beth Roche of Highland, Indiana has remained hospitalized in Boston since the marathon bombing.
On Friday, she will have knee reconstruction surgery at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
Roche had just watched her daughter cross the finish line at the marathon, when the first explosion happened.
She says she is still trying to identify the first responder who rushed to her side and protected her from the flying debris of the second bomb.
Roche’s knee injury was so severe that she could not run away like many others.
Although Roche faces a year of rehabilitation, her final knee surgery will eventually allow her to regain use of her left leg.
It’s not clear yet when she’ll be able to return home to Indiana
