Fallen officers, families honored at annual memorial even

Under a bright blue sky on this sunny Sunday morning, a sea of blue gathered on Chicago’s museum campus to pay tribute to the officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Superintendent Garry McCarthy, Chicago’s first lady Amy Rule, police supervisors, aldermen, county leaders and a host of others walked the path to Gold Star Family Memorial Park, to not only remember the fallen, but those loved ones left behind.

Organizers estimate some 6,000 police officers, Chicago and state, came to remember together today.

The faces of Chicago Police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty were front and center along the march route today.

The sacrifices officers make would not be possible, say organizers, without the love and support of family.  It is those family members now they hope to support.

Officials say an event like today helps bring the entire police family closer together but they also say they need to remember those who have lost loved ones in the line of duty all year round.
