The Chicago Police Department and Chicago Public Schools tried on Friday to calm concerns about student safety as C.P.S. prepares to shut-down 61 schools. web

Police Supt. Garry McCarthy and C.P.S. C.E.O. Barbara Byrd-Bennett took part in a “Safe Passage Walk.”

They walked from Ross Elementary at 60th and Wabash to Dulles Elementary at 63rd and Calumet.

Ross is scheduled to close, and its students will transfer to Dulles.

Along the walk, McCarthy and Byrd-Bennett noted empty lots, potholes, and abandoned buildings.

“Walking the walk that children will walk gives us incredible information and incredible opportunity for the partnership of the sister agencies,” said Byrd-Bennett.

The Chicago Teachers Union is outraged about the school closures, and called the “Safe Passage Walk” a publicity stunt and an insult. It pointed out C.P.S. students won’t enjoy the luxury of having the police superintendent accompany them through gang territories on their walks to school.

Great photo op – – Since these 'leaders' were surrounded by the police and TV channels – -Nothing but a photo op…Wahat a sad an d sorry group of people…

I don't think that tool goes to the bathroom without security – – NOT that he or ANYONE would need it here in the safest city in the world?!?!?!?!

  • Caligula

Yep… nothing but show boating after multitudes of the keystone cops swept the neighborhood. Any one that falls for this other than what it actually is, is a real dumbaZZ

I would love to see any one of these individuals walk through this area when the sun is going down like the children will have to in the late fall. In that case, you may see their picture on the paper but it might not be in a good way. I was working in a neighborhood where the drug dealers were fighting less than 10 feet for one of the people wearing CPS yellow vest. I think they were suppose to be there to make sure this kind of stuff doesn't happen by or endanger the kids. Of course he turned his back to it as he didn't seem to want to get involved. Way to keep it safe!!!

You know, I see your point – but, shouldn't it be ARMED/POLICE covering these areas – -Not to pander to the employee you're referencing – that turned his back – But, I gotta say – someone paying me $8-9 an hour – NO WEAPON to protect me or the kids….I think I'd turn MY back…I'm NOT dying for $8-9/hr and NO GUN!

That's what I mean. With OT and police spending being maxed out BEFORE summer, I guess it will be crime time on the other streets between the walk to and from school. I believe in keeping these kids safe and educated no matter what it cost. It seems like the savings from closing the schools will mean more packed schools, gangs crossing lines, kids walking further and the savings being eaten up on these longer walk zones. May seem like a dumb question but don't the kids have to get to these areas to walk? When gang bangers cross lines and start shooting who is going to catch the bullets? Lord please protect these children.

Have to agree with the others…..and how many cops are going to be walking with the kids? Reminds me of Jane Byrne when she and her husband moved into Cabrini Green for a few days way back when. These so-called leaders have no idea what it is like day to day, 365 days a year…..just another
    photo- op!!!

  • Guessed wrong

I know one big shot that is peed today. Forrest Claypool from the Chicago Cattle Car Company (aka CTA). He left his secure office to walk-the-walk with the other Shi…cago big sheets and not one mention of him being there in any of the press.

  • retiredinaz1

Once again…Chicago politics at its best! WHAT A JOKE!! Hey guys, put the media cameras away and walk down the same area alone……..ha……

This entire idea is soooo stupid!! Just ore publicity stunts for the public!

I'm happy that mc idiot and byrd brain noted those dangerous potholes. Those kids are going to have to run around them while they dodge the gun fire.
