2 wounded in police-involved shooting, shoot-out

A man was shot by an off-duty Chicago Police Officer on the city’s Near West Side following a shoot-out.

Police say the officer witnesses a shoot-out near Jackson and South Leavitt around 10:15 Sunday night.

One person nearby was injured. It’s unclear if that person was targeted or a bystander of the shooting.

After the shooting, four men got into a car and drove off. The off-duty officer followed the car southbound on Leavitt until it stopped three blocks away at South Oakley Street and West Van Buren Boulevard.

“The officer gets out, announces his office to the offenders in the car,” said Fraternal Order of Police Spokesman Pat Camden. “The two in the backseat are armed. One of the offenders in the backseat raises the .45 at the officer, at this point he opens fire.”

The officer reportedly struck one of the men and that’s when the car took off.

A State Trooper who was nearby conducting traffic followed the car to where it pulled over in the 300 block of south Maplewood.

The suspect’s car was found with no one inside. One of the suspects who had been shot was found nearby. He was transported to the hospital. No word on his condition.

“It shows Chicago police officers are working all the time,” Camden said. “He’s off duty had sense enough not to engage them individually, waited until he had help with the State Police and took action at that point.

Police continue to search for the other three suspects. The off-duty officer and State Trooper were not hurt.
