Thursday’s win over Texas was the Cubs’ most complete performance of the young season. Carlos Villanueva was great once again, the bullpen shut the door late and the offense gave the pitching staff some early run support.
There aren’t a ton of secrets when it comes to playing winning baseball. And as we’ve talked about, the Cubs’ starting pitching has kept the team in most of the games. But the lack of consistent offense and defense and a bullpen that has been up and down since day one have kept this team from getting on a roll.
This 10-game trip represents a decent opportunity. The Brewers are playing well this week, but they aren’t the team they were a couple years ago. Cincinnati is always tough, but the trip finishes up in Miami with four games against a very beatable Marlins team. I think a .500 trip is very attainable, if not better.
