Let’s do a couple good news vs. bad news items after 13 games.
Good news: the rotation has been terrific (3.20 ERA).Bad news: the bullpen has not (6.06 ERA, 4 blown saves).
Good news: the Cubs have 3 regulars hitting better than .300 (Castillo/Schierholtz/Castro).
Bad news: they have 2 hitting under .200 (Valbuena/Rizzo) and 2 others (Hairston & Sappelt) are a combined 2-33.
If the Cubs continue to get great starting pitching, they will win some games. The starters keep giving this team a great chance to win. The problem is, the bullpen can’t seem to hold a lead or keep it close often enough. It is a revolving door of closers and personnel right now and you just hope things settle down soon.
Offensively, the Cubs have struggled big time vs. lefties and seem to wait until the late innings to get anything going.
They’re playing a ton of close games right now and let’s hope they can create a couple breaks and turn these heartbreaking losses into nail-biting wins.
