2 teens charged after shotgun found in Elgin HS locker

Elgin police were notified Thursday morning that there might be a gun inside the school.  A student had reported seeing something suspicious.

Police arrived about 11:30 a.m. They were in the building for about two hours. Teachers say students and staff were calm while investigators searched school grounds.

“We knew something was happening, we were kept safe, it didn’t feel any fear, just disruption of the learning day.”

Police eventually found the shotgun inside a locker.  It wasn’t loaded, there was no ammunition, and they didn’t find anything else.

John Heiderscheidt, Coordinator of School Safety and Security said “No further weapons, no ammunition” was found.

A 15-year-old student was arrested.  On Friday it was learned that student had purchased the shotgun from another student at the school.

Jeff Swoboda, Elgin Police Chief said “Any weapon in a school is a problem.  The student bought the shotgun, so we have a second 15yo charged with that crime.”

Giffords Street High School is an alternative high school in Elgin with about 150 students.  On Friday school officials are praised the student who came forward after seeing the weapon.

Heiderscheidt said “It was excellent to see a student who saw something like this immediately acted, we acted on that information within minutes.”
