A key ruling was made today in a class action lawsuit involving the controversial former Chicago police office, Jon Burge.

The lawsuit charges that there was a conspiracy between police and some prosecutors that allowed Burge to use torture against black men, forcing them to confess to crimes they did not commit.

A judge is now clearing the way to find a special prosecutor.

Cook County state’s attorney Anita Alvarez is out of the mix because of her ties to former prosecutor Dick Devine and former Mayor Richard Daley.
