A fast-moving wave of thunderstorms pelted the Chicago area this morning with heavy downpours and hail.
Another wave of storms is expected to rake the area this evening with winds up to 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
This morning, pea-sized hail was being reported from the Wisconsin border to Aurora, according to the Chicago Weather Center. Larger hail was reported southwest of Sandwich, it said. Winds gusts of 50 mph were recorded Rochelle.
The storms caused delays and cancellations at O’Hare International Airport. As of 9 a.m., more than 140 flights had been canceled at O’Hare and more than 280 flights were delayed, according to FlightStats.
The weather service said another round of storms will hit tonight with a threat of damaging winds and up to 2 inches of rain.
