A project to reconfigure a congested North Side intersection is expected to create 100 construction jobs and spur economic development in the area.
The project is aimed at improving traffic flow and safety at the six-way intersection of Damen, Elston, and Fullerton. More than 70,000 vehicles pass through that intersection every day, and it consistently ranks among the top five intersections for the the most number of traffic accidents each year.
The reconfiguration plans include making right-of-way improvements that eliminate or relieve traffic congestion and improve the synchronization of traffic signals.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to begin the project next year. The city will need to acquire nine parcels of land to complete it.
