WVON radio celebrates 50 years at gala

A Chicago institution is celebrating its golden anniversary.

WVON hosted a star-studded event at the Chicago Theatre Saturday night. wvon gala

The radio station has been a voice for the city’s African-American community for the past 50 years.

Politicians and entertainers walked the golden carpet.

Star Wars director George Lucas, Actor Robert Townsend, civil rights activists Dick Gregory and Reverend Jesse Jackson, and businesswoman Mellody Hobson were among them.

Governor Quinn also declared yesterday “WVON day” in Illinois.
