Wrigley Renovation deal close

It’s not a done deal just yet but a spokesperson for the Ricketts family, who own the Cubs, say a deal is close on the proposed $500 million dollar renovations to Wrigley Field.

WGN News has learned it’s a good possibility an announcement could be made as early as Monday when the Cubs host its home opener.

There have been some major snags in the Ricketts family’s plans for the renovations. Owners of the rooftop decks across the street from Wrigley have been upset about plans to add several new sign inside the ballpark, including a jumbotron in left field. They’re concerned the new additions will block their views and ultimately hurt business.

Wrigleyville’s alderman, Tom Tunney, announced publicly for the first time Thursday that he has agreed to allow the large video board in left field as well as another sign in right field. However, Tunney said the size of those boards has not been agreed upon.

Tunney has also urged the Cubs to provide additional parking options for fans and even suggested the gravel lot owned by the Cubs on Clark and Grace streets could provide just that Tunney says the Cubs are considering building a two-level structure on that lot which could add 400 to 500 parking spaces.

Residents around the ballpark have expressed concern about safety if more night time games are added to the schedule as has been discussed. Tunney says the Cubs will be responsible for adding and paying for additional security if more night games are added.

While most of the major issues have been agreed upon, Alderman Tunney says there are still several small details that need to be ironed out before a deal can be reached.
