Parents, teachers protest Chicago school closings

The Chicago public school system will host 22 meetings Saturday to let parents make their case to keep their neighborhood schools open.

The school board plans to close 54 underperforming or under-enrolled schools this summer.

Tuesday, a group of parents marched on Mayor Emanuel’s office to ask for his help in stopping the closure of their local schools.

This morning, a handful of teachers demonstrated outside school board headquarters .

The city is promising safe passage for kids who would have to walk through hostile gang territory to reach their new schools.

The school board is required to hold three public hearings for each school on the closing list before it adopts the closing and consolidation plan next month.

  • CPS Teacher

Don't you dare characterize CPS students as gang-bangers! We don't need ignorant stereotypes of students in Chicago. You need to visit some of our public schools and see what is really going on there. You cannot write off a whole group of students who have dreams, goals, and hope for better futures. All CPS students have the potential to be successful and productive adults.

I went to Chicago public schools, if you don't think the schools have a gang problem, you're not really a CPS teacher or you are blind. Not everyone is in a gang, but every CPS school has a gang problem, and the ones on the south side have serious gang issues. These schools are being closed for PERFORMANCE reasons, only in Chicago would people protest sending their kids to a better school.

      • Law n order

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH U IM A COP THAT WORKS IN A CPS HIGH SCHOOL THEY HAVE THE LOWEST ENROLLMENT AND SCORES ALL ACROSS THE BOARD THEONLY THING THEY LEAD IN IS GANGBANGING FIGHTING GETTIN SUSPENDED AND GETTIN ARRESTED.THEY THREATEN AND CURSE OUT AND IN SOME INSTANCES HIT TEACHERS.WHAT WORLD IS THE CPS TEACHER LIVING IN.THESE UNDERPERFORMING AND UNDER ULTILIZED SCHOOLS NEED TO BE CLOSED DOWN

How much did CPS pay you to post on here? Stats don't lie! Keep on parading your 44% graduation rate around like it's a good thing!

Yes, all CPS students have the potential to be successful and productive adults, but the majority CHOOSE not to. Fix yourselves. I don't blame the teachers one bit for the lack of their students performance. I blame the students, but most of all, I blame their parents. Teachers can't go home with every child after school to make sure their students are doing their homework and studying. That is the student's parents job.

That is what we get when we elect politicians who allow their corporate America friends to its school board meetings. They are shutting down these schools, because they have urban planning in mind. This plan will accommodate the rich and make the poor even more poor. Rahm Emmanuel is a failure to this city and he continues to show that with his decisions. Ms. WorldChanger.

is rahm a greedy little balerina? yes. but he's just cleaning up daley's mess right now and doing what is necessary for the chicago public school system. if you can't see that, you are either blind or don't want to see it. call him greedy. call him racist. but in the end, this is the right decision and the city will benefit from it.

This is probably the most that these parents have done for their children all school year! I mean, who needs to make sure their children are going to school, behaving in school, and doing their homework when you can just show up and protest one day a year?? These parents need to start taking responsibility and blaming themselves!!!
