Death of woman in garbage chute appears accidental
Chicago police say it appears the death of an elderly woman who fell down a trash chute was an accident.
Investigators say preliminary indications show there was no foul play in the death of 80-year old Florence Banta.
Her body was found Monday at the bottom of a trash chute in the building at 1555 North Astor Street.
Banta’s daughter is now questioning whether the garbage chute was too large.
Chicago’s building code has no maximum size for garbage chutes.
A 16-year-old boy fell down a garbage chute in the same building and died last year.
