Several rescued after cop spots burning apartment in Lyons
Nearly a dozen people were rescued from a fire in their apartment building in southwest suburban Lyons.
A Lyons police officer spotted the fire after midnight Monday, in the 4500 block of South Prescott.
He knocked on doors and rescued several people before firefighters arrived on the scene.
Mary Jones lives on the second floor. She says the officer’s knocks woke her. She says the front hall was filled with smoke and fire, so she was forced to throw her two-year-old daughter from a second floor window to firefighters waiting below.
The girl was not injured.
One resident cut his finger and was treated.
The police officer was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. He’s expected to recover.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
