With a one-point lead against Duke and a cheering crowd supporting them, Louisville’s Elite Eight game became secondary.

All of Lucas Oil Stadium froze as Louisville guard Kevin Ware suffered a gruesome leg injury that caused visceral reactions from both teams.

Ware’s horrific accident occurred in front of Louisville’s bench as he landed awkwardly when trying to close out on a shot by Duke’s Tyler Thornton. Play stopped for several minutes until he was carted off on a stretcher to a cheering crowd.

Ware was being treated at nearby Methodist Hospital.

Teammates withdrew in horror as they immediately noticed his broken right leg.

Luke Hancock bent over Ware, sympathetically patting his chest as Ware writhed in pain. Guard Russ Smith and coach Rick Pitino wiped away tears before play resumed.
