A judge ordered Mitchell Silverstein held on $300,000 bail in bond court Saturday.
Silverstein appeared in court, wide-eyed, wearing blue hospital scrubs and red tennis shoes. Outside the courtroom, his family and attorney discussed the case amongst themselves.
One family member told reporters that Silverstein turned 17 on March 27th, the day before the Thursday night fight in Winnetka.
Silverstein’s attorney, Stuart Smith, told reporters his client was defending personal property when the stabbing occurred. Smith claims the cell phone belonging to Silverstein’s friend was stolen by the stabbing victim.
Prosecutors say that Silverstein plunged a spring-loaded serrated knife into the chest of the victim. The boy suffered a collapsed lung; prosecutors say he’s in intensive care.
The teen’s father said that there was never a cell phone involved and he’s not sure if Silverstein was hallucinating.
He said his son is recovering but could have died because of his injuries.
