Rallies held to protest CPS closings
Mayor Emanuel’s administration is targeting the closing of 61 CPS campuses.
Most of the closings are on the city’s South and West Sides, affecting around 30,000 students.
That’s not sitting well with the teachers union or parents.
Parents protested outside Woodlawn’s Dumas Elementary School while the Save Our Neighborhood Schools coalition held a rally outside Horatio May Community Academy in the South Austin neighborhood.
Both rallies were held Friday morning.
Many parents are upset that their children would lose their current teachers and face new safety issues, especially walking across areas where rival gangs are fighting to get to their new schools.
