A Chicago police detective said to be investigating several robberies in the city follows possible leads to East Hazel Crest, and ends up shooting and killing a man.
Officers were conducting surveillance around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 1900 block of West 171st Street when they saw 27 year-old Ryan Rogers and a woman get into a vehicle.
The officers went up to Rogers and the woman. Police say Rogers then drove the car straight at the officers and hit the officers’ vehicle.
One of the detectives shot Rogers, and he was pronounced dead at Ingalls Memorial Hospital.
People in the neighborhood are questioning why Chicago Police officers were in their community, and aren’t buying the claim the officer acted in self-defense.
“He never hit their car, tried to hit their car. Where their car was parked at, and the way that he went, ain’t no way he could have hit that car, even attempted to run the police over,” said Lorenzo Brewer.
Witnesses say the officers weren’t in uniform, and weren’t in a marked car.
The woman wasn’t wounded.
Police questioned and released her.
