Madonna lashes out against Boy Scouts

Madonna is the latest celebrity to take a stand against the Boy Scouts of America.

At Saturday’s GLAAD awards, she called on the organization to change what she called, “stupid rules.”

In the past, Boy Scout officials have said they appreciate everyone’s right to express an opinion.

She also spoke out against homophobia, discrimination and bullying.

Madonna has joined people like Carly Rae Jepson and Train, who refused to perform at the Boy Scout Jamboree.

They both said the reason they pulled out was because of the organizations ban against openly gay or transgender members.

She's always been an egotistical, arrogant individual. Popular culture relies on this kind of self-centered person to keep the fading spotlight on a little longer before it goes out. Note that the shirt appears to be a Cub Scout uniform shirt. The patches and pins are placed incorrectly. The rank badges are for Boy Scouts. The BSA could legally file suit for copyright and trademark infringement. I sure she'd go after anyone using her copyrighted and trademarked material.

I am grateful to Madonna, Bill Gates, Carly Rae, Train, and all the others for standing up to discrimination. It is through such actions that change happens. I hope and expect that BSA will make the right decision in May and end the ban. If not they risk continuing their trajectory towards becoming the Boy Scouts of Conservative Christians rather than the Boy Scouts of America. Once the ban is lifted it will be a total non-issue and the fears of the right-wing will not materialize at all, just as happened with Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

In civilized Scouting nations, the Boy Scout program has remained non-sectarian as envisioned by its British founder, Baden Powell. They do not exclude gay men and gay teens in Canada, France, Mexico, Australia, the UK (where Scouting was founded), or elsewhere. Only in the USA with our disproportionate population of Christian fundamentalists has this been a problem.

What the media have missed is how much this ban is really about a Mormon stealth takeover of what used to be a non-sectarian organization. Mormons hold a theological hatred of homosexuality given their belief in celestial marriages. The ban was implemented in 1992 mainly under Mormon pressure. Mormons then blackmailed the Scouts with withdrawal during the BSA vs. Dale arguments in 2000. Mormons, only 2% of the population, today control over one third of all BSA troops. May the Scouts return to their non-sectarian roots and welcome back all families.

I quote Scouting’s founder, Lord Baden Powell:
"Buddha has said: 'There is only one way of driving out Hate in the world and that is by bringing in
Love.' Scouting's aim is to produce healthy, happy, helpful citizens, of both sexes, to eradicate the prevailing narrow self interest, personal, political, SECTARIAN [emphasis mine] and national, and to substitute for it a broader spirit of self-sacrifice and service in the cause of humanity."

I look forward to rejoining the Scouts after the ban ends. I hope the religious conservatives will remain in the Scouts, knowing that when we are out chopping wood or putting up a tent in the rain, our religious differences or sexual orientations matter less than our ability to work together, as Americans, as humans.

BSA needs to stand behind their core values and principles and not give into pressures from the liberal media, liberal celebrities and liberal President.
