A Northeast Illinois organ recipient is receiving precautionary treatment after receiving the organ from a donor who died of rabies.
The CDC says another organ recipient, a Maryland man, died recently from rabies after undergoing an organ transplant from the same donor more than a year ago.
Doctors knew the donor had brain inflammation, but didn’t know rabies was the cause.
Organ donors are not routinely tested for rabies beacuse it is extremely rare.
