Mayor’s park initiative unveiled, 300 playground to be rebuilt

Mayor Emanuel announced a major initiative today to rebuild 300 playgrounds in neighborhoods across the Chicago.  The mayor wants every child to be able to take a 10 minute walk to a safe and vibrant park.  And in some communities take back their neighborhood.

Under the plan aging equipment will be replaced, 100 basketball courts will be refurbished, 39 artificial turf fields will be added.

Mayor Emanuel says property values near a great park will increase 25% immediately.  Small businesses will come and residents will stay.  One of the biggest undertakings is Bloomingdale Trail, spanning Humboldt and Wicker Parks it’s 2.7 mile conversion of an underutilized elevated train line into a connection of trails for bikers and pedestrians.

Another is in Little Village where open space is scarce.  But in the next five years, a former superfund site at 31st and Sacramento will become a 23 acre park.

Improving the quality of life for all Chicagoans is Mayor Emanuel’s goal.  He wants everyone to have pride in their neighborhood and a place to spend time as a family.

I thought that the city was so strapped for cash that they couldn't even pay for their retired workers pensions.

What ood are beautiful playgrounds whn kids are going to get shot at while playing. Untimely and unnecessary to use valuable resources on this project. Try to address gun violence first.

Smoke and mirrors – Death rate is UP so put a feel good story in the news – - Maybe people will forget that more people have died in Chicago, than in the war in Afghanistan…
