Emanuel urges caution during snowstorm

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is urging people in Chicago to take their time getting around during Tuesday’s snowstorm.

The mayor, Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Charles Williams, and other city leaders held an update at the Office of Emergency Management and Communications on their efforts to fight the snow.

The city has unleashed all 284 of its snowplows. Crews will tackle the main roads first, then hit the side streets. They are prepared to work through Tuesday evening and into the early morning hours of Wednesday. They are also digging into 175,000 tons of salt to keep the roads from becoming icy. There are 19 salt piles across the city.

Crews have also removed a part of the median on N. Lake Shore Drive at Schiller so first responders have better access in case of an emergency, like the one in February 2011.

“Everybody, whether you’re driving, or at the airport, or using mass transit, needs to plan, use extra time, given the conditions of the weather, and given everything else that’s going on…” said Mayor Emanuel.

“… make sure that everyobody else in your neighborhood, if you can, lend a hand when you need to, do the appropriate thing to be a good neighbor,” added the mayor.
