The Chicago Police Department is being sued on claims of discriminatory hiring practices.
According to the Chicago Sun Times, the lawsuit filed by attorney Dan Herbert alleges relatives of police officers were disqualified from the Police Department’s hiring process, but were told they were bypassed for other improper reasons.
Herbert said he has interviewed a number of bypassed candidates and found they were each related to a police officer.
One candidate says he was dismissed for not replying to an email from the Police Department. That man insists he never received that email.
A female candidate claims she wasn’t allowed to start training because the department did not complete her background check.
Their attorney says at least 35 bypassed candidates appear to be sons, daughters and other relatives of officers.
The two plaintiffs currently listed in the suit are seeking $50,000 in compensatory damages and re-entry into the Police Academy.
The City of Chicago has not commented on the allegations.
