Now that Pope Benedict the 16th has officially stepped down as the leader of the Catholic Church, the local followers of the faith say they’re optimistic of what’s to come.
Many who attended mass today at Holy Name Cathedral in downtown Chicago said they have a slight sense of sadness to see Pope Benedict resign, but an even greater sense of hope for the future.
While many Catholics praised Pope Benedict for the work he did during his papacy, some are hoping his successor will accomplish even more, especially with the youngest Catholics.
The faithful are also hoping the next pope will be able to bring the worldwide Catholic Church closer together.
Chicago Catholics say they’re hopeful the College of Cardinals will make the right decision when it comes to electing the next pope.
They say the future of the church is still very bright.
