A 3-month old baby gorilla at Lincoln Park Zoo is in stable condition after suffering a severe facial injury in its exhibit last week.
The cause of the injury is not known, although it appears to have been inflicted by another gorilla.
Zoo staff have separated ‘Nayembi’ and her mother from the rest of the gorillas in order to treat her injuries.
Zoo President Kevin Bell said in a statement, “Her recovery isn’t a certainty—we find few certainties with such fragile infants, nearly a quarter of whom don’t make it through their first year of life.”

These incidents most usually occur because of human intervention by zoo staff and visitors
