Google Glass: Will 2013 be the year of the wearable computer?

On tonight’s WGN News, we’re talking about Google Glass – the augmented reality glasses the company is planning to release in just a few months. Well, for 8,000 lucky souls chosen to become “Google Glass Explorers,” at least. Oh, and you’ll need to pay the full $1,500 to buy a pair.

The company is taking applications through February 27th and they’ll be contacting people in March. You can find more information about how to apply at Google.com/Glass.

On tonight’s News at Five, we’ll be talking about other types of “wearable technology” that’s currently available or potentially coming soon. They include…

– The rumored Apple iWatch. Is the company developing a new smart watch that you can talk to using Siri?

The Pebble Smartwatch was one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever. The company raised $10 million and customers pre-ordered 85,000 units. You can read more about it and purchase one here (they just started shipping to early buyers).

– We also talked about Nike’s wearable technology – including the FuelBand and their Nike LunarTR1+ Sport Pack.

So what do you think? Will the Google Glass take off and replace our smartphones? Or will they just become another novelty item? One thing’s for sure – I can’t wait to get my hands on a pair.

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below, or on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
