Art Institute of Chicago unveils new Tours app featuring “Indoor GPS”

On tonight’s WGN News, we went to the Art Institute to try out their new Tours app. The museum hired the minds at Meridian Apps to bring their new “Indoor GPS” technology to the historic Michigan Avenue building. More than 200 sensors were installed throughout the museum, enabling visitors to get step-by-step directions to different works of art using an app on their smartphone or tablet.

The app is free (Just search Art Institute of Chicago Tours) for both iOS and Android. And to answer your next question, you won’t have to worry about bad cell service in such an old building – as part of the upgrade, the museum now has free WIFI throughout the building. You’ll find my video feature with more about the tours above. Here’s more info about the Art Institute…

Art Institute of Chicago | 111 S. Michigan | 312-443-3600 | Open daily 10:30am-5pm, Thursday open until 8pm | artic.edu for admission prices
