Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose took another step in his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament tear, participating in five-on-five drills during Monday’s practice.”He did what everyone else did, just a normal practice,” coach Tom Thibodeau said of Rose, who in interviews last week admitted he was unsure whether he would be ready to play this season.

Last week, Bulls vice president of basketball John Paxson told WMVP-AM 1000 that the return from the All-Star break would allow the team to do full-court, five-on-five drills and that Rose would join in.

Kirk Hinrich, who missed the last seven games with an infected right elbow, will be back in action when the Bulls face the Hornets in New Orleans. Hinrich seemed more eager to talk about Rose’s participation in 5-on-5 action than his on return. The team had three seven- to eight-minutes scrimmages in which Rose participated.

“He was able to get out there and it’s good,” Hinrich said of Rose. “It was something that us as a team needed, as far as every individual coming off the break needed to scrimmage a little bit. And I’m sure it was good for (Rose), helpful to see exactly … give him a good gauge of where he’s at.”

Hinrich was in and out of the lineup with various injuries before the All-Star break. He started 40 games with averages of seven points, 5.2 assists, 1.6 turnovers, and 28.3 minutes in those games.

The Bulls went 2-5 without Hinrich the last seven games. For the season, they are 26-14 with Hinrich starting at point and 4-8 without him
