IL Senate prepares for Valentine’s Day vote on same-sex marriage

The Illinois Senate is set to vote Thursday on whether to legalize same-sex marriage.

The Senate president said he wanted to get the same-sex marriage bill up for a vote on Valentine’s day.

Supporters are confident they have the votes to pass the bill.

After the Senate vote, the measure would be considered by the House.

Governor Quinn voiced strong support for same-sex marriage during his State of the State address.  He’s already said he would sign the bill if it passes.

If it’s approved, Illinois would be the tenth state, plus Washington, D.C., to legalize same-sex marriage.

Civil Unions were made legal in Illinois two years ago.

Maybe you'd like to go back to the days of segregation, Paul? This is not crap, this is civil rights. Love makes the world a better place. Family makes the world a better place. Maybe you shouldn't have the right to marry the one you love…

People are yall stupid look what happened in new york when they pass that bill.thats ok jehovah gone destroy this nasty evil world anyway gone keep living in sin

      • TCOOK

what does "gone keep living in sin" mean? is that a sentance? Is it some other language?
Jehovah- "They believe that the destruction of the present world system at Armageddon is imminent, and that the establishment of God's kingdom on earth is the only solution for all problems faced by mankind.[15]"
right, Ok, thats a sad way to live ones life.

I agree with Paul. Forget about this 'gay crap' by passing the bill and letting gay men and women have the rights we are entitled to, then move on. There are a lot of other pressing issues. It is nonsense that we still have to face bigotry and hate. I think a lot of conservatives are okay with gay marriage. For those that aren't, guess what? It's time. Get over yourselves. We're winning.

It's not about winning or losing, Andrew. And it's not a civil rights issue. Marriage by definition is just simply not possible between two people of the same sex.

The definition of marriage has changed so much over time. You can't force people to marry you. You don't have to marry your rapist. You CAN marry outside of your race. You don't have to marry your brother's widow. You can't take on more than one wife… Why people are so desperate to cling to the idea that marriage should exclude people based on their sexual preference is beyond me.

buh? What? So the ONLY reason people marry is to reproduce? Weird, I thought people married for love, tax exemptions, And whatever other rights the goverment give married people that homosexuals want too. So by your reason "yeahok" No one should have sex either, other then to reproduce. (another reason gay people want to marry, so they can have the right to go visit their partner if they should end up in the hospital or E.R.) There have been tons of stories about how same-sex partners cant visit each other if the issue arrised just because they aren't "family" I do agree on THIS SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE! Who gives a damn if they marry. It doesn't affect you, two people just want to get married and be happy together. It's no ones business, let them marry and move on.

      • Andrew

It is about winning rights. I deserve to have the same protections that a straight person does, and I deserve for you to stay out of my business. Why do you care if I get health care incentives, hospital visitation rights, or any other protections? Why are you so concerned about what I do and who I do it with? Seems odd and misguided if you ask me. Oh, and yeah, we're winning.

YEa lets not worry about unemployment and money issues and why people are going crazy bc of this and shooting places up. Wake up . Its not guns, its people facing struggles. Enough with trying to occupy our attention on meaningless crap such as gay rights. They have no rights. They are different and always will be laughed at.

i WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF A LAW WAS PASSED THAT STATED DOGS AND CATS COULD BE MARRIED. iT IS ALL ABOUT MONEY NOT CIVILITY. ANY WAY ANY ONE COUDL GET RICH, A LAW WOULD PASS LIKE EVERYONE MUST HAVE CAR INSURANCE

  • TCOOK

I love how the most Un-educated people make the most outlandish comments and they have NO IDEA what they are talking about. Read a book or a study before you damn all Gay people for wanting the same CIVIL RIGHTS guarenteed in the Constitution as all AMERICANS are entitled too.
Seperation of Church and State- this is a non-issue that has nothing to do with religion etc. it ONLY has to do with peoples RIGHTS.

  • jon

ITs all about money. They dont care gay or straight, you a paying the cities money to purchase a license. Anything for money . Wake up people. Government doesnt care about anyone. Open you eyes

  • KAY

I MEAN I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST GAYS.. I JUST THINK THAT ALL OF THIS BRAIN WASHES THE GENERATION TO COME. WE TRY N TEACH OUR KIDS, MEN AND WOMEN ARE MADE TO BE. BUT WHAT DO U THINK THEY THINK NOW WHEN THEY SEE WOMEN N WOMEN, MEN N MEN, MEN WHO WANTS 2 BE A WOMAN WITH A STUD FEMALE? ITS JUST CONFUSING. I FEEL SORRY FOR WHATS TO COME NEXT.

    • Not all caps

Well then, perhaps, based on your theory, more people actually are gay. It's just that in previous generations we have all been "brainwashed" into being straight by seeing so many straight people. Think about it…your idea is pretty dumb. Gay people are mostly born gay. Oh, and turn your caps button off it doesn't make your point seem any better.

      • KAY

LOL I WASNT TRYNA MAKE MY POINT SEEM ANY BETTER. I MEAN ITS JUST MY OPINION. DIDN'T MEAN TO OFFEND YOU. YOU COULD HAVE SCROLLED RIGHT PAST MY POST IF YOUR SO CONCERNED ABOUT MY CAPS LOCK. AND LET ME GUESS YOU GAY? NO HARD FEELINGS, I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST YOU. SO DONT TALK ME SO PERSONAL. BUT I HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER BY TRYING TO GET YOUR POINT ACROSS. AND I PURPOSELY MADE ALL MY LETTERS CAPS LOCK ESPECIALLY FOR YOU :)

      • Not all caps again

Okay, Kay. No offense taken because your grammar and overall writing suggest to me that you have achieved a G.E.D. at best. Nothing personal. ; )

  • Tired of Morons

I will be so glad if this passes! I had thought about moving to Vermont when they first had legal same sex marriages but I always knew Illinois would eventually come around. Yay!

  • gary

. To do this vote on Saint Valentine's day is a mockery of this day, and just another step for us to become Sodom and Gemmorah. We will one pay for every immoral act we do. But, if you don't believe or were brough tup with no sense of decency, i guess that's on you then. We are all given free will, and wil account for our actions one day. I guess you could always stand before God and tell him you don't believe in him and this cannot be happening and see how that works for you. Maybe you could wave your little rainbow flag, before you go down to hell.

    • Separate State

Uh, not everyone follows your religion. So to threaten us with the teachings of it is just plain stupid. I deny the existence of Jesus Christ. !!!!!!!!

    • Rich

Wow. Just wow. I find it interesting that an overwhelming majority of the anti-gay statements here have major spelling and grammatical errors, especially yours Gary.
