The 911 call center is scaling back the number of police responders to focus on more serious crimes.
With this move, officers will no longer be sent out to burglaries and car thefts where the offender is no longer at the scene and the victim is not in immediate danger.
The department is hoping to free up 44 officers a day.
Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said before this decision, Chicago police responded to about half of 911 calls compared to 30-percent in most cities.

Police have to become more visible. I would prefer my tax dollars went to more police instead of bike lanes.

What have bike lanes ever done to you? I use them everyday and think we need even more. Chicago police have been worthless for awhile. Look at the map for these serious crimes.. if gang members want to kill themselves more power to them.

…just another means for McCarthy and Rahm to manipulate the statistics. have you ever tried to file a report through their Alternative Response Unit?

I didn't realize people called 911 for NON EMERGENCY issues!!!! Duh, about time CPD is responding to REAL 911 calls. Another issue: I didn't realize people went to the EMERGENCY ROOMS for NON EMERGENCIES!!! SMH!
