Funeral arrangements set for slain teen; reward now $40K

Now at $40,000 dollars, the reward for information is growing– and so is the outrage as Hadiya has become a symbol of dreams and potential cut short in gunfire.

Mourners prepare for another vigil Friday night at Harsh Park in honor of Hadiya Pendleton.

The event started with conversation inside the Kennicott Park Fieldhouse nearby.

Tracy Croon, a concerned resident, said “It’s just sad that the young people are being taken from us so early.”

Fred Minnis organized this.  He lives in Minnesota and didn’t know Hadiya but hopped on a bus to Chicago– determined to do something.

“We can’t just sit on the sideline and say that’s sad or we need to pray. We need to do more than pray we need to act,” he said.

The 15 year old student at King College Prep was standing under an awning at the park on Tuesday with a group of kids when she shot was killed, just a week after performing at events for President Obama’s inauguration.

Richard Taylor said “The fact that she made international news– Her legacy will live on.”

Earlier Friday Chicago Police Chief Gary McCarthy stood with Hadiya’s parents and a group of pastors at the school.  McCarthy said police have gotten a lot of tips.  They’re chasing leads but need more help from the public to close this case.

Funeral arrangements for Hadiya Pendleton are set:

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 8th from 2:00pm – 9pm at Calahan Funeral Home at 70th and Halsted.

On Saturday, February 9th there will be a wake will be from 9am -11am and a funeral is 11am -2pm at Greater Harvest Baptist Church at 51st and State, with burial to follow at Cedar Park Cemetery.

A large crowd is expected to mourn the loss of this young girl who has touched so many lives.

Best solution: a high-grade, low-altitude thermonuclear device detonated right over the South Side. Not sure though; roaches are said to be able to withstand anything.

I'd listen to your fear and move away, far away. Law enforcement is overwhelmed and helpless and they, you and the country knows it. Screw the location you love, get over it and move away. Put your children first and move out of the state before it happens to you. West coast, East coast, Canada, anywhere but there. Screw your job, SURVIVAL FIRST!!

it is people like you who are afraid to take a stand. I have lived on the Westside for 60 years. I have seen my share of everything there is to imagine. People that have moved away has still lost loved ones to violence. Violence is everywhere. Don't think because you move to another area or state that you are leaving it behind. You just may move to a more dangerous area in a different state.

The reason why I mention this is because I'm really on the west coast. North San Diego to be exact. We have our problems here but I'm truly shocked at what you folks are forced to endure, it's a travesty for any American to accept as reality. The folks in your town are truly brave to withstand this and I'm just blown away by this mess. = (

It's going to take more than hitting your caps button to stop this. Each family is left with a dilemma and have a choice to make. Your backs are clearly against the wall and there's a choice to be made. The longer you take the worse it gets. Gotta face facts.

Don't focus on my cap lock…yes it's going take prayer…but much more …are kids are lost for same reason the message I communicate was less important then my computer cap lock…to sum it up….we must go to the sorce …the kids that have this mind set that killing ok …then we can start fixing the problem …but I'm only one person…going take all us that still have value for life & morals …Rip to this young beautiful baby girl…she looks so much like my 12 year old daughter…I break down ever time I see her picture on the news or see her mom & little brother face in the media…..

Marcie, if there were more people like you who saw that the only way to handle this bad situation is to go to the source, perhaps there would be less killings. Our youth believe drugs, alcohol. guns, sex, violence, is what is importance. We as adults have to start setting an example, but don't know how. How do we get rid of guns; violence in movies and TV; etc. We need to give them better role models..

My heart grows heavier every day from the steady gun violence in Chicago! I have lived in other states and have come back here to take care of my mom, and the violence has gotten worse by the year! I wish that I knew where to start with the help, because I do not think I can sit by and watch this anymore…We need to ban together more now than ever! I know that this is not the reason that Dr. King and countless others gave their lives and time to have this happen!

I live in Chicago and am disgusted and heartbroken over what happens here on a daily basis, but the death of Hadiya Pendleton has taken things to a new level. I think about her last moments, the dreams and aspirations she had, how she fought for peace, the unimaginable pain her family is enduring, and the fact that her life was torn away by a coward hiding behind a gun.

I'm ready, willing and able to do whatever it takes to put an end to this craziness. It needs to start at home. Kids are having kids and parents aren't around to be a good role model. Marcie and Nicole and anyone else, want to brainstorm together?

For starters, I think a rally should be held downtown like the one I participated in for Trayvon Martin. It combed the streets of downtown and ended up with a powerful rally at the plaza in front of 401 N. Michigan.
