Three hundred people are out of work after a massive 8-alarm factory fire in Burlington, Wisconsin.
The Echo Lake Farms Produce Company “is one of the largest employers of the city,” said Mayor Bob Miller. The manufacturing plant went up in flames around 6 p.m. Wednesday night.
Firefighters from 88 departments in Wisconsin and Northern Illinois battled the blaze. They had it under control by noon Thursday and were mopping up hot spots.
“I have not seen a fire with this impact,” added Burlington Fire Chief Richard “Dick” Lodle.
The mayor said city officials would be meeting with company officials to offer assistance in helping the company rebuild. He promised to give employees help in filing for unemployment aid.
The second shift was working at the time the fire broke out, but no one was injured. Fifty nearby homes were evacuated due to heavy smoke.
The Mayor said an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
