A Chicago high school student who recently returned from performing at President Barack Obama’s inauguration was killed at a park Tuesday.
It happened in the middle of the afternoon, just blocks away from her high school on the south side.
Hidiya Pendelton, 15, was a majorette in the King College Prep marching band. After her inauguration performance, Hidiya was planning for a trip to Paris with the band. But those dreams came to a crashing halt.
School let out early after taking exams. Hadiya and about 10 people were hanging out, huddling under a canopy in nearby Harsh Park to avoid the rain.
Police say that’s when a boy jumped the fence and ran toward them shooting.
Hadiya was shot in the back and later died at the hospital.
Two other boys were hit. A 16-year old was last listed in serious condition and a 17-year old suffered a graze wound to his ankle.
Police say they don’t believe Hadiya was the intended target. They say she was not in a gang, but preliminary reports are most of the people in the group with her were gang members.
None of them stuck around to help the shooting victims, or to give police any information about the shooter or exactly what happened.
Students at King College Prep are really taking the news of her death hard.
They say the halls of the school were unusually quiet as students mourned Hadiya’s death.
