CHICAGO, January 23, 2013 – CLTV became the first news station to provide live broadcasts from an Illinois Supreme Court hearing in Springfield Wednesday.
Viewers were able to watch the WGN News coverage on CLTV of proceedings related to the prosecution of the owners the Chicago nightclub E2, where 21 people died in a 2003 stampede.
WGN News became involved in working closely with the court system on broadcast coverage in 2012. On October 23, 2012, WGN News became the first Chicago area news station to provide live broadcasting of a trial, with coverage from Kankakee County. As of 2008, Illinois was one of only 12 states that prohibited all trial courts from being televised. Courtroom coverage became an available option in 2012; Thursday, January 24, marks the one year anniversary of allowing cameras in the courtroom.
