A south side high school basketball coach has been charged with sexual assaulting a female teenager.
According to Chicago Police, 35-year-old Kevin Jones, who the Chicago Tribune identities as a varsity boys basketball coach at Epic Academy Charter High School, is charge with two counts of felony criminal sexual assault and one count of attempted criminal sexual assault with force.
The incident happened on Thursday Jan 17th around 8 p.m. in the 8500 block of S Cottage Grove. Police say one 17-year-old female was sexually assaulted inside of a vehicle and a second 17-year-old female was able to exit the vehicle and flee the scene.
The Chicago Tribune reports Jones was driving the girls home.
The lawyer representing the school released this statement tonight:
“EPIC Academy takes the safety of its students very seriously. If concerns are ever brought to the attention of school administrators about the safety and well-being of its students, the administration takes all actions available to them. Such has occurred in this case.
Mr. Jones is not currently employed at EPIC. Due to this being a personnel matter, the school is not at liberty to disclose the nature of the coach’s departure from EPIC. However, it can confirm that as of January 18, 2013, Mr. Jones is no longer employed or affiliated with EPIC.
As Mr. Jones was not a teacher in the school on a regular basis, but was employed only as a coach, it is not anticipated that Mr. Jones’ departure should cause any disruption to the education of EPIC students. However, additional supports have been put in place and will continue to be available to students, if needed.”
