Dog stranded on icy Lake Michigan rescued

There were some tense moments on icy Lake Michigan Tuesday morning as rescue crews tried to reach a dog that was stranded on the ice for hours.

Someone spotted the black dog at 7:30, scampering on the ice at Jackson Harbor off 65th and Lake Shore Drive.

When rescuers got there, they watched run up and down the ice.  He got very close to open water but not close enough to fall in the frigid lake.  And he wouldn’t come close to shore.

At 10:30, rescuers finally got close enough to the dog to tranquilize him, then get him to shore.

He’s now in the care Chicago Animal Care and Control.  They say the dog is a male Sheppard type dog and about a year old.  If you think it is your dog, you can contact animal care at www.adoptchicago.org
