Man charged with murder, arson in fatal fire
A man has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated arson, after police say he set a fire that killed his wife and injured their six-year-old daughter last week.
According to authorities, 35-year-old Gregorio Carmona doused his wife, Claudia Martinez, with gasoline, then set her apartment in the 4800 block of North Kenneth Avenue on fire Wednesday night.
Martinez was transferred to Loyola University Medical Center’s burn unit, where she was declared dead just before 6 a.m. Thursday, according to the medical examiner’s office.
The couple’s six-year-old daughter was also taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital following the fire, said police.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Carmona was arrested after being released from Swedish Covenant Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation from the blaze.
Carmona reportedly told police he tried to save Martinez, but there was too much smoke.
