VWF Post will be able to keep flying the American flag

Members of the VFW Post in West suburban Glendale Heights  say they were stunned when their new landlord asked them to stop flying the American flag.

Several hundred veterans belong to the VFW Post 2377, off Army Train Road in Glendale Heights.

They’ve occupied the building for decades, but the property was sold last summer, and that’s when, the vets say, they began getting letters from the new owners citing them for violations.

Midland Realty and Development of Oak Brook Terrace allegedly told the vets they were leaving broken beer bottles behind, which they say come from a hookah bar next door.

They also told the vets they could not park their van in the lot, but the final straw for the vets was when the company asked them to stop flying the American and POW flags and take down the flag poles.

The vets say they’ve tried to meet with the manager but could not get through. They say they’re willing to talk, but the flag is non-negotiable.

The realty company  would not talk to WGN-TV, but one person, who identified himself only by his first name, on Friday said the company will not bring down the flag pole and will allow the vets to continue flying the flag.

I am currently serving in the UNITED STATES ARMY, and I am from Glendale Hieghts. My father is a Vietnam Veteran and a memeber of the VFW post shown above. My father has flown the American and POWMIA flag at our house since his return and will continue to do so untill the day he dies. For some one To tell the American people, Let alone Veterans who laid there life on the line so we can have that right to fly the American flag, that they are not allowed to do so is unpatriotic and a coward. That management company messed with the wrong group of people. As military active and retired, we took an oath to protect that flag and its american people. All I have to say is " You wanted down, I dare you to take it down."

Well if that would happen, only the American Indians would be left here. Think about it, everybody here is an immigrant except for them.

Good comment, Oh Wise One! I'm a natural born American, have "American Indian" blood, a veteran, as well as interested in comments like yours. 1. The term is Native American, 2. I AM back where I came from since 1972, and 3. Saying everyone is immigrants does not take away the validity of their opinions or beliefs. Quite possible the best thing you could do is go have you Obama vote recounted.

I would think that this is a very bad move for the realty company in the long run. Remember they will need permits for building and other such needs. Those permits have to be acquired through a community official. Last I checked the VFW is one of the most community conscious organizations out there, and there members do not forget someone who try to bully the flag out of there hands.

I wish you would have contacted the Warrior Watch Riders, Patriot Guard and the American Legion Riders!!! You would have had over a hundred vets standing there with you. As the Chaplain for the 12th District Sons of the American Legion, Vice Commander and Assistant Director of the ALR Post 489, I would have had the entire town of Yorkville up in arms over this!!!!!!!!! And you would have seen a turnout!!!!!!!!!!!

        Bob,

We are having a peaceful display of honor with a FLAGLINE to show our support for those Veterans of Foreign Wars who have earned, more than most, the right to fly Old Glory wherever the hell they would like. Be it Mount Suribachi, Normandy Beach, one of many Forward Operating Bases in Afghanistan or even the Moon, not to mention a Veteran of Foreign Wars Post on American Soil.
        When: Sun, January 20, 9:45am – 11:00am
Where: 142 East Army Trail Road, Glendale Heights Illinois

TELL EVERYONE TO SHOW UP. WE WILL HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH FLAGS!

I am sure that the bottles and van parking is ruffling some city official, and they are using some kind of city ordnance to put pressure on the landlord, this I can understand, but the flag issue is just anti American, and they can kiss the ass of each and every American, that has ever served this country !! I would take this to court, and get a injunction against the city and landlord , make it a media blast and see how long that complaint stands up ..

Sorry to hear about this. I would be willing to bet that this company is running scared now. They probably do not realize the "can of worms" they have opened up. They will never live this one down. I have been an auxiliary member for years and know that if you screw with one VFW post ,you screw with all of them. I have NEVER heard of anybody being asked to take down the flag – who are these people anyway ? VFW's around this beautiful nation will be jumping on this.
I think this company (Midland , Inc. ?) owes all the veterans a HUGE formal apology IN WRITING (and maybe a years free rent JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE CAUSED SUCH A STIR, AND SHOW SOME GOOD FAITH?) for being COWARDS (for starters) and even thinking they could expect to get anywhere with this nonsense. THIS AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN , NOT ON OUR WATCH !

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL OUR VETERANS
