VFW post in Glendale Heights can still fly flags

Members of the VFW Post in West suburban Glendale Heights  say they were stunned when their new landlord asked them to stop flying the American flag.

Several hundred veterans belong to the VFW Post 2377, off Army Train Road in Glendale Heights.

They’ve occupied the building for decades, but the property was sold last summer, and that’s when, the vets say, they began getting letters from the new owners citing them for violations.

Midland Realty and Development of Oak Brook Terrace allegedly told the vets they were leaving broken beer bottles behind, which they say come from a hookah bar next door.

They also told the vets they could not park their van in the lot, but the final straw for the vets was when the company asked them to stop flying the American and POW flags and take down the flag poles.

The vets say they’ve tried to meet with the manager but could not get through. They say they’re willing to talk, but the flag is non-negotiable.

The realty company  would not talk to WGN-TV, but one person, who identified himself only by his first name, on Friday said the company will not bring down the flag pole and will allow the vets to continue flying the flag.

The vets say they want the promise in writing.

WGN-TV went to the offices of Midwest Realty’s parent company, Equity Financial Group, but the doors were locked and despite numerous phone calls, no one seemed ready to make firm promises to the VFW.

COWBOY D: You are unclear of which buiilding you will be holding the flag line. Please print the address so anybody interested can be there. I would like to join you but because of health reasons I cannot. I hope you have great participation. I am proud of you for defending the VFW's right to fly a flag from Equity Financial/Midwest Realty's unpatriotic requests. I am also proud of all who have served in protecting this great nation!!! Thank you.

Do you think Equity Financial/Midwest Realty's true motive is to evict the VFW so they can obtain larger rent from a terrorist supporting group?

The Flag is in the middle of the parking lot of Hilltop Ctr, a mostly unoccupied mid-1970s small strip mall. The only other business listed on the marquee is Plato's Closet in Google Street View. How this can be a problem is unknown unless the owners are trying to open a bar, think the VFW's liquor license will compete, and drunks will collide with the pole as an insurance liability. New owners obviously try to increase the return on an investment and "persuading" a tenant to leave to have a "bar-ready location" available at higher rent is an obvious solution.

As for Oak Brook Terrace, the only thing I know there is Chapel Gardens Cemetery, where I and my family have our plots and niches. I actually didn't know any other business was there except the Cemetery, for the "town" is so small and seemingly incorporated just to serve businesses.

Sounds like they are just finding excuses to try and get them out. I am sure the VFW got a very good lease agreement, and this company just sees it as lost revenue. Jerks

WGN: Please tell us all the facts and the whole story!
WGN: Please also post a copy of the letter that the Lessor or Property Management organization allegedly sent to the Lessee or Tenant. Also obtain and post dated copies of all complaints from the Village of Glendale Heights and the Glendale Heights Police Department for this property and/or Lessee and/or Tenant for the past 6 months. We're adults. We can figure out what the real issue is and if you performed your obligatory "due diligence" in your reporting this story to the public. – Thank You!
My Comments: Okay, I checked this out as best as I can. Once again it appears the media may be leading us down the wrong path by not giving us the real story. Did the media read or even see the letter sent by the Lessor or Property Management organization? I've only have hearsay, so, no, I actually haven't read it either and I'm just going from memory from the hearsay. Kinda like the media does once they edit the story. Sometimes the truth gets edited out or it was never there in the first place.
Nowhere in the letter does it say the Lessee or Tenants cannot have a flag or a flag pole and there was especially no mention of not being able to fly the American Flag. Lessor and Property Management organization believe that the American Flag represents a living country and therefore considers the American Flag a living thing.
Here's the issue: The Lessor or Property Management organization is trying to renovate the property. They contacted the Lessee or Tenants via telephone about the renovations and arranged for contractor access. The Lessee or Tenants were harassing and essentially giving grief to the contractors trying to perform these renovations and were not working with the Lessor or Property Management organization to accomplish these needed renovations and possibly visa versa. This prompted the Lessor or Property Management organization to have a Property Manager visit the site to reach an understanding between the Lessee or Tenants and the contractors regarding access to the property for the renovation work. While at the property the Property Manager noted a lot of broken glass (beer bottles), discarded diapers, etc. in the parking lot and on the landscaping and there also was a van with some type of banner on it parked on the property adjacent to Lake St. Such banners are not permitted on the property by the lease agreement. These observations were addressed with the Lessee or Tenants at the meeting and a follow up letter was sent to the Lessee or Tenants by the Lessor or Property Management organization. Additionally, Glendale Heights Citizens have registered several complaints about noisy and rowdy behavior at that property.
It appears that the VFW folk may have misinterpreted the letter thinking that the American Flag is a banner or they're intentionally making a big stink about this using the American Flag to create grief for the Lessor or Property Management organization.
It's also apparent that WGN may have done a shoddy job of investigating this issue before reporting it to the public.

you sound like your acctually the scumbag building manager, pretending to be 'namvet'. why do i think this? i doubt an anonymous internet commenter could dig up ALL that information without being personally involved. thinly veiled attempt to get people on your side, scumbag!

      – from an ACTUAL afghan war vet.

      • OldSalt1083

Concur with your assessment, David. The language is nearly legalese. "Lessor" – snicker. A human being would have said "renter." Also, note how the writer tries to blame the messenger (WGN) for "shoddy reporting" and not posting the documents, but the writer who appears to have at least seen the documents does not post them himself. But, I think "scumbag building manager" can be abbreviated to slumlord. Hmm, now what kind of people smoke hookahs or know people who want to rent a space to open a hookah parlor? – USN (Ret.)

You give much information in your letter, it just so gives away who you are! I remember the arrogance in your tone as though you are above the VFW and it's patrons! You are much more important then all of them put together…. I am surprised at the tone of your letter above since I am quite sure it was you that went to the post and had a drink…. The post cannot help the fact that the shoddy contractor working on the building had some MAJOR mishap THAT maybe causing your outburst… You have much information on this matter and it's occurrences, either you are the arrogant a$$hole that I met or you were told much more information than you should have been! Thanks for making this property management company look even worse…There was NO misunderstanding on the REAL (NAM) VETS of VFW2377's part! I guess you should have asked to SEE the letter before YOU spoke this time!!!

I saw the newscast last night , the first page at least and i stopped and read what i could on the screen and in the same paragraph as the "van" or truck in front with a banner, i could SWEAR THAT IT says (as plain as day) the word FLAGS underlined saying they are prohibited. So —- i think you better look a little deeper because, WAIT FOR IT, WAIT FOR IT — AH HA – (GEE EVEN I FOUND IT IN JUST A FEW SECONDS, WASN'T SURE MY MEMORY HAD IT RIGHT EITHER, BUT I DECIDED TO LOOK AT IT AGAIN ! LOW AND BEHOLD) i have replayed this newscast and am looking right at the first page of the document as i am writing this comment —- as plain as day — i really don't understand how you missed it, that is if you really are "checking into" this — SO NOW WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ?

  • test site

Hello there, There’s no doubt that your blog might be having web browser compatibility issues. When I look at your site in Safari, it looks fine however, when opening in IE, it has some overlapping issues. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Apart from that, excellent website!

Beachfront and poolside sun beds and cabanas are provided as well.
Nearby are unique campfires, shisha pipes (flavored tobacco) and
two wonderful restaurants: Rosetta for Middle Eastern food and Silk Road for
Japanese fare. The textbook will most likely have to be in
current use by the local college or university.
