An unidentified 47-year-old man was brought to Northwestern Memorial Hospital after he was shot in the head this morning near the Merchandise Mart. It appears to be a graze wound and police say he is expected to survive.
Early reports from the scene say the victim gave a thumbs-up as he was being put into an ambulance.
Police say the victim worked in the West Mart Center, formerly known as the Apparel Center, across the street from the Merchandise Mart.
He was apparently walking in through the dock area near the corner of Kinzie and Kingsbury shortly before 6 a.m., when witnesses say they heard two quick shots, saw the victim fall and a masked man in dark clothing run west across the Kinzie Street bridge — then disappear.
Detectives made quick work of gathering evidence and clearing the scene.
Police have not released a description of the suspect or a motive for the shooting.
The West Mart Center is home to a Holiday Inn, Comcast SportsNet, and the Chicago Sun-Times. It is across the street from the East Bank Club, where Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other celebrities like Oprah Winfrey work out.
