Gun violence among young people plaguing Chicago

This is an archived article and the information in the article may be outdated. Please look at the time stamp on the story to see when it was last updated.

The nation and the world were horrified, almost a month ago, when 20 school children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. were slaughtered.

What twisted, diabolical motivations drove Adam Lanza to take such actions we will never know. But, while Newtown Connecticut experienced 26 murders in less than 5 minutes, in the city of Chicago something even worse is happening. School children in Chicago are being murdered in greater numbers than Newtown Conn.

WGN’s Robert Jordan examines some of the issues related to adolescent shooters and what can be done to prevent the next one.

    Mr. Jordan,
Let’s start with a map of where the 500 murders occurred last year and then add the thousands of gun injuries and thousands of gun confiscations.
Why is the media afraid to address this debacle?

the reason our children being killed in chicago isnt a national out cry and 26 kids in Newton, Conn is , is because Chicago's young murder victims are black and hispanic, Newton's were white children in a middle class neighborhood/town that never see's gun violence. 26 white kids die, Obama sheds tears, and teachers are probably going to get guns. 60 black and hispanic kids die, well… ya know. SMFH

Be madder at the minorities that are killing the minorities. There is a grand difference between a lunatic killing 20 kids than your beloved minorities picking each other off. Please find a new self-righteous soap box to stand on.

hey kris this is django fuck you all the people who think there is not a answer for a nation that feeds off action and addiction, division and the size of your pocket book. to hate is like having cancer. but have some respect for the black babys we lost to careless violence. they are not use to gunfire. rest babys god will forever hold your soul.

huh? read my post again. I'm mad because 60 minority children's violent deaths aren't as important to America(and never will be smh) as 26 white children. it should be equal. when is obama going to shed a tear over little Heaven sutton, or little Aliyah?

  • Tired of the Morons

Why don't you get the story right. The chimps and beaners in the neighborhoods effected don't give a damn about the laws until they get caught and try to use them to save their ass. It's not a gun problem, it's a degenerate problem. Get rid of the degenerates and you get rid of the problem.

  • Open Mind

Kris is right, IMO, but even if you disagree, do your comments have to be so hateful & disrespectful? Hatred comes from fear & lack of information. Please download/rent American HIstory X. Great movie.

This story, and the series of panels / interviews that followed were excellent: informative, objective and so very relevant. Despite the tone of some of these comments, there are a LOT of us who care about the well-being of young people, families and communities. This discussion of how to prevent violence and how to better use our scarce public resources (on real services and support, with incarceration as a last resort) is incredibly valuable and appreciated. Keep up the good reporting and discussions.
