A commission on school closings appointed by Chicago Public School officials proposes that no high schools should be closed in the city.

The recommendation comes as a surprise as the district faces about a billion dollar deficit.

The panel also proposes that the district’s best-performing schools and those showing progress not be considered for closing as well.

There are other proposals, but the Chicago Teachers Union says it doesn’t see anything in the report that looks like the answer.
