A 13-year-old Chicago student faces a juvenile court judge Thursday morning after authorities found a gun and bullets in a bag stored in his school locker Wednesday.

Chicago police say the boy attending Marsh Elementary School at 99th and Exchange was in the playlot around 1 p.m. when he allegedly was found with a 3-inch knife in his pocket. Upon further questioning by school administrators, he admitted that he brought an unloaded gun and bullets earlier that morning.

Police responded and searched the locker where they found the boy’s backpack with an unloaded gun and an unknown number of bullets inside.

The boy has been charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon.

My children go to this school and the biggest concern was the fact that parents were not informed of the incident until this morning and even so parents informed parents the school never made any attempt at calling parents.

so if the kid got the gun from the parents but they didn't have it legally then what??? and if the little fool got it from some gangbanger friend, most of which have their guns illegally who do you blame then..@ Smiling Politely

This is a home problem. How could any child get a hold of all that?!

This school is an excellent school with great teachers, staff, and administration. It is not the school to blame!

God works in mysterious ways…(9 times out of 10) “facebook” may be the motive, not a role-model /thug etc. duhh!! ban facebook for a while then go from there! and the SAD part is that You parents know this! people you are stronger than you think. #down with facebook nobody gives a damn what yall have to say, it’s all about work and education.

The school is excellent the staff is great . I agree if this child had some better parental supervision and instruction heck some home training PERIOD . The issue with bullying if this is true should be adressesd accordingly . It would help if there was better programs of parenting beginingin homes of the children .Parents are the first teachers lack of parenting and involvment is the problem !

how did a CHICAGO student get his hands on a gun…… CHICAGO has a ban on guns…..see how well this works?? Banning guns dosen't work. We must have more perental involvment. It's hard to do, when the parents aren't much older than the children. It's just a sad situation all the way around. :(

Thank God it was a 13 year old kid who had it and not 13 terrorist who planned on jihad at the school. I say arm the teachers reasponsibly. Dont let them just carry a gun concealed but rather provide them with access if they need it. The best solution is at At least this proposal has checks and balances.

For those of you who have forgotten, 19 terrorist went to a lot more trouble to harm us than it would take to attack our schools. According to a report that was prepared for congess, During 2005, Border Patrol apprehended approximately 1.2 million illegal aliens; of those 165,000 were from countries other than Mexico. Of the non-Mexican aliens, approximately 650 were from special interest countries.Border patrol estimates that they apprehenden 10-30% of the traffic.

I would encourage all of the readers to look at the attack on Beslan in Russia where 377 peopel were killed at a school that was attacked by terrorists. How are we different. Again, a 13 year old boy with a small caliber hand gun in his locker is bad, 13 terrorist attacking our school with actual machine guns and not providing our teachers with the ability to lock a door and protect our kids is worse.
