Boy, 13, arrested after bringing gun, ammo to school

Parents will meet at Marsh Elementary School Friday after a student was arrested for bringing an unloaded gun and ammunition to school.

Police say a .22 revolver and 33 bullets were discovered inside the locker of the 13-year-old student on Wednesday. A three-inch pocket knife was also in the student’s pocket.

The gun may belong to a relative of the child.

The teen appeared in Juvenile Court and was charged with unlawful use of a weapon.

Chicago Public Schools sent a letter home to parents saying: “We are working together with these departments in reviewing and modifying our security plan to maximize our existing resources and in identifying any needs to ensure a safe educational environment for our students.”

Marsh Elementary School does have metal detectors but the devices are primarily used for parents and visitors to pass through. That policy is now under review.

The teenager has since been released to the custody of his mother.

The 13-year-old boy goes to court next month.

Correction: the parents were not notified when it happened. The children told their parents. This caused the parents to appear at the school the following day and ring the phones. Marsh… Very Bad! Unfortunately, Marsh will have to set an example for all the schools. Great job to the parents for having their voices heard!!!

Where is this child's parental supervision obviously nobody has informed this child of having better judgment and sense of structure . Why did this Child feel he had to bring in a weapon ? Even if it wasnt loaded . The school is otherwise a great school the staff addresses issues way faster than many others on the south side . The kid left his thinking cap at home and decided to bring a gun and used ammo in , obviously his mom if he really has a full time mother …?? overlooked giving him a lecture on guns and violence period . A good school with 1 metal detector and 1 security guard , it's been like this for a long time and no such thing has happened before -it was a good day to take advantage of a safe school for this kid . To make te school look bad is unfair !Luckily it could have been worse thank God that was not the case .I hope this child's mother is more villigent about raising this child a d enforcing better sense in efforts of his future .
