New crime fighting app could help with ‘code of silence’

The Cook County Sheriff’s department wants to enlist you and your smartphone as deputies.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart unveiled a new app called iWatch Cook County that lets citizens provide information about crimes anonymously using encrypted technology.

It’s a huge breakthrough for law enforcement that could help police in the Chicago area break through the so-called “code of silence.”

While the free app is now available for iPhones it is not yet available for Android phones.

Let's START with just getting folks to take back the neighborhoods in the community. We already have Crimestoppers, which is anonymous. Just simply pick up the phone. Why, for crying out loud, does it now have to be encrypted? Nothing's secret about crime. Get a grip Cook County! This is a mighty, costly gufaw that is just "re-inventing the wheel." My goddness. Let's go back to making the police officers get out of the frigging cars and foot-patroling. Start there. The police are too disconnected with citizens and that fosters distrust.
